Importance of Maintaining Proper Tire Pressure

The air pressure level in your tires has an impact on many aspects of your vehicle’s performance. If you aren’t making a point to ensure that you’re driving with properly inflated tires, you are doing yourself and your vehicle a great disservice. Here are some tips for maintaining proper tire pressure, and the benefits you’ll receive!

Tire Inflation Tips

  • Determine your vehicle’s tire pressure specifications. Vehicle manufacturers will provide this information to you in your vehicle’s owner manual. It is also often posted on the inside of the driver side door frame. Do not use pressure indicated on the tire’s sidewall – this is not the pressure specified for your vehicle.
  • Routinely check your tire pressure. Best practice is once per week, but at the very least you should be checking once per month and before any long road trip.
  • Invest in a high quality pressure gauge. Digital gauges are now available and are typically no more than $20.

Benefits of Proper Inflation:

Safety

The most important benefit to driving with properly inflated tires is safety. Having the right tire pressure on your vehicle’s tires gives you the best control of your vehicle at all times. It is especially important when driving at high speeds. An underinflated tire will increase your braking distance and give you less responsive steering and handling. When your tires have low pressure the tire’s sidewalls are able to flex excessively – generating heat. Overheating in the tire can cause loss of tread and even cause the tire to blowout.

Service Life

When your tires are inflated improperly – they wear out much faster. This type of wear can be uneven and cause wheel vibrations, excessive tire noise and negatively impact the tire’s performance. Properly inflated tires will have a longer life – saving you money!

Fuel Economy

Having the correct tire inflation allows the tires to operate at peak efficiency. When your tire is under- or over-inflated it increases the rolling resistance, which reduces your car’s gas mileage an average of 3-5%. This type of decrease over the life of a vehicle can cost hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars in additional fuel costs.

Having properly inflated tires will give you better control, keep you safe and can save you a ton of money. There is no reason not to stay on top of it!
